Swedish IT and medical-technology firm Sectra has signed an agreement with BT to provide Picture Archiving and Communications System (Pacs) products and services to the majority of London's public hospitals.

BT is the local service provider for the NHS London Programme for IT (LPfIT). BT has been providing Sectra's Pacs (a system for handling radiology images electronically) to London trusts via a former Sectra partner since 2004.

Under the agreement, Sectra will, as a subcontractor to BT, begin to assume direct and full responsibility for the support and maintenance of the systems and will also supply additional Pacs products.

The 21 London trusts comprise 25 hospitals, which between them perform more than 4,000,000 radiology examinations annually.
