Ofcom to release more spectrum to support Wimax services

Ofcom has announced therelease of further spectrumto support deployments on long-range wireless broadband services, such asWimax.

The first UK commercial Wimax service was announced by a project promoted by Milton Keynes Council.

Ofcom proposes to release the new spectrum in the 2010-2025MHz and

2500-2690 MHz bands (known as 2.6 GHz).

The spectrum can be used for Wimax or next-generation 3G services, said Ofcom.

An auction for the spectrum is expected to take place next summer, Ofcom said.
