The Queen has made BT chief executive Ben Verwaayen an honorary Knight of the British Empire (KBE).

Verwaayen was appointed as chief executive of BT in 2002, and was awarded his KBE in recognition of his services to the communications industry.

He will officially receive his award from a cabinet minister early in the New Year.

He joins a growing list of business leaders from outside the UK who have been recognised with a KBE. These include Microsoft founder Bill Gates, BP chairman Peter Sutherland, and Niall Fitzgerald of Reuters.
