IBM is supporting the open source OpenSolaris OS from Sun Microsystems on its mainframes.

IBM has also adopted Sun's xVM virtualisation initiative for its mainframe platforms. Rich Green, executive vice-president of Software at Sun Microsystems, said, "Broadening our collaboration with IBM expands the reach of Solaris and Sun xVM to the mainframe marketplace, and brings the benefit of open source operating systems and open source virtualisation to the highest scale datacentres in the world."

OpenSolaris will now be available for IBM's System z mainframe.
