UK business are more likely tooutsource datacentres servicesthan
their European counterparts, with half already doing it according
to research from telco COLT.
About 70% of UK IT directors said power, security and space
challenges were reasons for doing this, with the difficulty of
managing environmental impact another key driver.
Geoffry Gilton, head of products for COLT Managed Services, said
environmental considerations are rising up the IT agenda. "We are
finding that businesses are increasingly interested in reducing
their carbon footprint when looking for a third-party datacentre
provider. Cooling, in particular, can account for up to 60% of the
energy costs of a datacentre," he said.
The survey was carried out by, Coleman Parkes, which questioned
400 IT directors in businesses with more than 500 employees in 13
European countries.
Seventy six per cent of those interviewed in the UK also said
that they expect a secondary datacentre to become a standard
requirement for business continuity.
