Ofcom has fined broadband provider Prodigy £30,000 for
failing to comply with requirements to provide information on how
it allows customers to switch broadband provider.
The fine comes after the industry regulator received complaints
about broadband providers not complying with rules governing
changing broadband providers.
Ensuring that consumers can move broadband providers quickly,
easily and with minimal service disruption is a priority for
Ofcom.
"Ofcom considers that Prodigy has failed to provide all the
required information. Given Prodigy's ongoing failure to comply
with the Section 135 notice, and having followed the procedures set
out in the Communications Act, Ofcom has decided to impose a
penalty of £30,000 on Prodigy," said Ofcom.
Prodigy was fined due to continued non-compliance and the
investigation is continuing, said Ofcom.
Since laws were introduced last year to make it easier to switch
provider, Ofcom has seen a decline in complaints, which suggests
providers are complying with them.
The UK retail broadband market is performing well, with
competition between a range of providers giving consumers choice,
said Ofcom.
Broadband is available to 99.6% of UK households, and more than
80% can choose between two or more wholesale providers. Ofcom said
65% of homes have the choice of four or more providers, and many
can choose from eight providers.
