F5 launched itsBig IP WebAcceleratoryesterday, in response to demand for faster web application
performance, claiming it is four times faster than anything else on
the market.
The general fall in web performance stems from the increasing
need for higher levels of security on the internet. Safe
corporations need to use
secure socket
layer encryption, which makes remote downloads and application
access painfully slow, said Tim Saylor, IT Director at Averitt
Express, which provides freight transport and supply chain
management to more than 100 countries.
Users these days expect global area feeds at local area speeds,
said IDC analyst Lucinda Borovick, director for datacentre networks
at the research company. "Many organisations deliver web
applications - like portals and e-commerce - to remote and mobile
users who expect a Lan's speed and reliability."
And they are right to do so, according to Jason Needham, F5's
director of product management. It is up to the IT industry to up
its game, not lower expectation, he said. "Content [should be
located] closer to users so that first-time visits to web
applications are fast. That will generate repeat visits and ensure
web applications are a success."
