Newham council adopts new e-procurement system

The London Borough of Newham has adopted a new e-procurement system from EGS to cut costs and improve operations.

The council has adopted local government system IDeA:marketplace.

Martin Scarfe, financial advisor for Newham, said, “We felt EGS’ IDeA:marketplace was the best fit for us. It is tried and tested technology, has a large number of local authorities already using it, as well as a large number of suppliers.”

About 150 buyers within the council are now live and a total of 250 buyers throughout the organisation will join the EGS exchange, with every major department enabled to buy online.

So far, about £3m of transactions are passing through the exchange, with up to half of the council’s £300m budget expected to follow over time.

Additional council spending linked to supporting the 2012 Olympics will also be handled through the exchange.
