IT managers are spending twice as much time supporting
infrastructure as they should be, according to a survey
commissioned by Microsoft.
The survey found that 62% of IT managers spend more than a day a
week on unplanned activity, and 22% class their role primarily as
"firefighter".
IT managers think they should be spending no longer than 16% of
their time managing crises, but the according to the survey
firefighting, as it is known, actually accounts for around 30% of
their time.
More than half the 250 IT managers surveyed said reducing
rebalancing their roles away from firefighting and towards
strategic activity would improve IT efficiency
and productivity.
The survey said IT pros who spend more than half their time
supporting infrastructure are less likely to see themselves as
delivering a proactive, good IT service than those who spend less
time doing support.
Neil Sanderson, product manager for
Microsoft’s System Center, said with businesses
so reliant on IT infrastructures, a well maintained IT system can
be the difference between failure and success.
