Participants in the
Higher Speed
Study Group (HSSG) of standards body the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE)
are discussing whether to keep 40 Gigabit Ethernet as part of their
charter, or to continue its commitment to the 100 Gigabit Ethernet
standard.
Advocates for 40 Gigabit Ethernet argue that it is a required
stage in the development path to
100 Gigabit
Ethernet, but opponents say it will slow down progress on 100
Gigabit Ethernet which, they say, already has appeal.
The group will meet in San Francisco in July to try to resolve
the issues where it has been noted that the division’s very
existence may come into question. A 100gbps standard was originally
scheduled to be finalised by the IEEE in either 2009 or 2010.
Fidelity Investments and
Somerfield, the supermarket chain, are two examples of UK
businesses that have deployed the technology in their
datacentres.
