Cardiff University is implementing the UK’s largest
wireless Lan.
Education IT supplier RM will build the wireless network, which
will cover 66 buildings across three square miles. It will include
over 1,300 access points and cater for 30,000 students, 5,000 staff
and visiting guests.
The university’s goal is to ensure maximum wireless coverage by
expanding the existing wireless capability for its Cathays Park
campus and outlying peripheral sites.
The initiative is designed to fit into the university’s
Modern Working Environment project, which is
the core of its
Information Services Strategy for the
future.
“We want to enhance the wireless networking service as much as
possible, to improve the users’ experience and to ensure the
service is as robust and resilient as possible, with the least
amount of man effort needed for ongoing management,” said Anthony
Cope, IT manager at Cardiff University.
RM will deploy a Wi-Fi management system from Trapeze Networks
to help deliver the easier management the university is
seeking.
