IBM brings new enterprise-class tape systems to the mid-market

IBM has announced new tape storage systems with encryption aimed at the mid-market.

The offerings are based on the Linear Tape Open (LTO) Generation 4 standard, offering greater capacity levels and improved performance. Dell recently launched a similar product based on the standard, with on-board data encryption too.

With its launch, IBM's enterprise-class tape encryption functionality is now incorporated into several LTO 4 tape storage products for the mid-market.

IBM's new tape systems offer improved data rates of up to 240Mbytes per second, which is 50% faster than LTO Generation 3, and increased cartridge capacity up to 1.6Tbytes, double the capacity of LTO 3.

The IBM System Storage LTO 4 tape storage systems start at £2,720 for the IBM System Storage TS2340 Tape Drive LVD SCSI version.
