Thunderbird 2 e-mail client is go

Mozilla has launched Thunderbird 2, the latest version of the free open source e-mail client. Thunderbird 2 is designed to allow users to more easily manage and organise e-mail with tags, advanced folder views, and fast inbox and message searches.

Scott MacGregor, lead engineer on Thunderbird 2, said, “In Thunderbird 2, we have incorporated tagging to e-mail. Tagging initially gained popularity on blogs, and photo and link-sharing sites as an intuitive way to organise online information so users could easily find desired content.”

Users can choose from hundreds of add-ons to customise Thunderbird 2. By integrating professional networking tools, VoIP calling and shared address books directly into Thunderbird, users can expand the e-mail client into a versatile information and communications hub, said Mozilla.

Thunderbird 2 competes against other free desktop e-mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook Express.

It is available now as a free download for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
