Web domain name governing body Icann has rejected the
introduction of a .xxx top-level domain for porn
sites.
The .xxx top-level domain has now been vetoed for a third and
final time by Icann. There had
been calls to introduce the new domain to make porn more
identifiable to search engines, and to aid filtering by
parents.
While some porn firms wanted the new domain, many established
ones didn’t as they had already spent vast sums establishing the
names of their existing sites.
Tom Newton, product manager at internet security systems
provider SmoothWall, said, “A .xxx top level domain will not help
keep children away from porn.
Even if legislation were introduced to force pornographers to
only use the .xxx domain, it would not be enforceable worldwide -
just across the UK, North America, and perhaps the EU at best.”
Newton said, “A ruling for a .xxx top level domain would give
parents and guardians a false sense of security. It will not make
finding porn harder - on the contrary, it will be easier, and if a
child does get unfiltered access he or she would know where to go
to find the 'good' stuff.”
