The BCS has highlighted the importance of training to
the IT industry with its sponsorship of last month's IT Training
Awards, run by the Institute of IT Training.
"As the BCS works towards
professionalism, awards such as these rightly rewarded companies
that strive towards excellence," said Pete Bayley, BCS director of
qualifications. "Training is an important part of the wider IT
industry and can make a huge contribution to making sure IT
supports business goals."
At the awards ceremony two companies - the Training Camp and
Thomson Scientific - scooped two gold awards each out of a total 11
categories.
The Training Camp won the gold award for Training Company of the
Year for the second year in a row, and for Learning Centre of the
Year. The judges praised its "different approach in terms of
delivery methodology and product development with a focus on the
holistic experience of learning".
Thomson Scientific took home the gold award for its staff
development programme, created to help its 2,400-plus global
employees understand how its products meet the needs of customers,
and to integrate new employees.
Thomson's other award was for Training Department of the Year,
after the department transformed itself within a year from dealing
with ad hoc enquiries to supporting the global business.
Belfast City Council - Information Services Belfast won the
equivalent award for the public sector, after impressing the judges
with how the trainers had contextualised generic materials.
Leeds City Council Social Services Department took home the gold
award in the Internal Training Project of the Year for training
staff to use a new electronic social care recording system. In the
equivalent external training category, Xerox came first for a
project involving simulation-based e-learning materials.
The E-Learning Project of the Year award went to Priory Group
& Information Transfer, which put e-learning at the heart of
its corporate learning programme.
Institute of IT Training chief executive, Colin Steed, said,
"Recent economic times have been tough for everyone in IT
departments, particularly for those working for IT training
providers. The quality of the entries has been higher than ever,
demonstrating that the industry is pushing forward and creating
higher quality, measurable, business-aligned learning
solutions.
"No matter what the market conditions, quality and excellence
remain key to success in this industry."
