Professionals working in IT and telecoms have more
flexibility than those in other sectors to work from home,
according to a survey.
Research by conferencing supplier
Polycom, based on a survey of 1,200 UK office workers, revealed
that a third of IT and telecoms professionals could work from home
as much as they liked - significantly more than those working in
media, advertising or financial services.
The research suggests that homeworking is becoming more
attractive as commuting, particularly in London, becomes more time
consuming and stressful.
“Our study shows commuting takes longer and is more stressful
that it was five years ago and people are less happy with their
jobs as a result,” said Steve Leyland, Polycom managing
director.
Phil Flaxton, chief executive of
Work Wise UK, a initiative
backed by the CBI and the TUC to encourage flexible working, said
that changed working patterns could encourage flexibility.
“The UK has not only one of the longest working weeks but also
the longest commute times in Europe. The social impact of work is
considerable. The stress and health cost, as well as the impact on
family life is huge,” he said.
