Current software licensing models could hinder the adoption of grid technologies that use virtualisation software to run applications over several machines, a grid user group has warned.

"Current software licensing models make users pay to install a copy of a package on every computer that they may use. This model is unsuitable for the 21st virtualised century. In a virtualised environment, applications may run briefly on several computers," said Ian Osborne, intellect project director of Grid Computing Now.
