Virtualisation technology provider SWsoft has joined the
Standard Performance Evaluation Corp (SPEC) as part of its new
working group to develop standard methods of comparing
virtualisation performance for datacentre servers.
Long established as a provider of workstation yardsticks, SPEC
is a non-profit organisation that establishes, maintains and
endorses standardised benchmarks to measure the performance of the
newest generation of high-performance computers.
SWsoft authors the Virtuozzo operating system virtualisation
software, which allows a single Linux or Windows OS instance to be
dynamically partitioned into multiple, highly-efficient virtual
environments.
The Virtuozzo architecture aims to enable each virtual
environment to scale up to the full resources of the physical
server and maintain performance at levels consistent with a native
server.
SWsoft claims that Virtuozzo enables density of up to hundreds
of virtual environments on a single physical server. SWsoft will be
among good company with the current SPEC member companies: the
roster includes AMD, Dell, Fujitsu Siemens, Hewlett-Packard, Intel,
IBM, Sun Microsystems and VMware.
"SPEC welcomes SWsoft and looks forward to its active
participation in the virtualisation working group," said Walter
Bays, SPEC president.
"Virtualisation is an important factor affecting IT, and the
time is right for industry-standard methods of evaluating
performance."
The more virtualisation becomes adopted, rapidly according to
the aforementioned IDC, support finding credible benchmarks will be
essential for IT managers.
SPEC has a great pedigree among the very hardware suppliers
whose resources will be virtualised. Having a SPEC mark for
virtualisation technologies will play an important part in
end-users getting the right products for their needs.
