Employee confidence in the health of the IT sector has
dived, according to the latest IT Employee Confidence Index from
Spherion.
In the report, the index fell 4.3 points to 54.1, according to
third quarter figures, as fewer workers believe that the economy is
on the up.
This pessimism is offset by a strong sense of job security. A
secure 73% of IT workers – an increase of 3% on last quarter –
believe their jobs are safe.
Brendan Courtney, senior vice president of Spherion Professional
Services , says these seemingly contradictory views are easily
explained.
“IT workers are still being enticed to stay with their current
employers through a series of retention efforts which may explain
why even more of them are confident in their own job security,” he
says.
Despite these enticements to stay put, a Skillsoft survey
reveals a less than rosy picture of UK workplace happiness.
Two-thirds of the 2,800 employees surveyed say they want a new job,
chiefly because they don’t earn enough money or they’re bored.
But satisfaction grows with status. A commanding 82% of people
in managerial posts say they are happy in their work.
