Sage embeds open-source database into software

The Sage Group has signed a global agreement with MySQL AB which enables Sage to embed the open source MySQL database into its product portfolio.

Sage intends to introduce MySQL into its small business range over the coming months. The MySQL database has become the world's most popular open source database.

Klaus-Michael Vogelberg, Sage Group chief technology officer, said, “We chose MySQL as it proved to be the most powerful and versatile programme available.

“MySQL embraces an open source methodology which injects rigour and agility into the development process,” said Vogelberg.

Vogelberg also said that MySQL reduces overall cost of ownership as it is not dependent on one platform or stack, and that it has low hardware requirements which keeps costs down for SMEs.

Under the long-term agreement between the firms, any Sage application can now use MySQL technology within clearly defined terms. The integration of MySQL into Sage products will not cost more for Sage customers.
