Tesco has delayed the launch of its new Tesco Direct
non-food web ordering service because of IT problems.
Tesco was scheduled to launch the service yesterday, but says
the launch has been delayed for an undisclosed period as a result
of the IT problems.
The problems are believed to be linked to the company’s existing
web infrastructure but Tesco has not confirmed the details.
Tesco Direct was announced last month and promises to give
customers the chance to order over 8,000 products over the web,
ranging from beds and sofas through to kitchenware, electricals,
cameras, bikes and golf clubs.
The launch was seen as a challenge to established non-food
e-tailers like Argos. The main Tesco website currently describes
Tesco Direct as a service “coming soon”.
When it eventually becomes available, Tesco Direct will be
supported by a catalogue, and users will also be able to phone
through orders.
The company already has a web ordering service for food
items.
