Lancaster University’s ICT Focus unit is to offer the
certified ethical hacker qualification developed by the
International Council of Electronic Commerce
Consultants.
The university is one of the first UK educational establishments
to provide the course.
The ethical hacker qualification is aimed at IT security
professionals and experienced systems administrators looking to
move into security.
Rachel Fligelstone, head of the ICT Focus unit, said the
intensive five-day course would help participants gain an insight
into the mind of a hacker – a different approach to that of many
other security courses, which focused on risk assessment or
disaster recovery.
"They will learn some security principles, but mainly the tools
and skills that hackers use to infiltrate IT systems and networks,"
she said.
Fligelstone said the university was also looking at the
possibility of integrating the certified ethical hacker course into
its academic degree programmes.
