Google has upgraded its Google Talk instant messaging
and voice over IP service.
The upgrade comes a year after the service’s launch, and is
designed to make it easier for users to transfer files and leave
voicemail messages for other users.
A new “send file” button in the service will allow users to send
documents, photos or other files by transmitting them through a
chat window as a thumbnail, which can then be viewed in full size
by the recipient.
Users making voice calls can now also leave a voicemail when
recipients don’t answer, or leave a voicemail message for them
without having to initiate a call.
Users of Google’s Gmail e-mail service can play voicemail
without any extra software. Users of other e-mail will have to
download an MP3 voicemail attachment to hear any messages.
Yahoo’s Yahoo Messenger instant messaging service also has voice
features.
