A qualification in software asset management based on
the ISO 19770-1 standard has been launched by IT governance
consultancy Ultima Risk Management.
ISO 19770-1 was introduced by the International Organization for
Standardisation in April as part of an effort to create
internationally recognised standard business processes for software
asset management.
According to Ultima, its Software Asset Management Essentials
programme is the first course that leads to a qualification
covering the standard. IT staff who take the three-day course and
pass the exam will be able to prove to employers that they know how
to run an organisation’s software asset management in accordance
with ISO 19770-1.
Ultima managing director Martin Jones said the course also
covers how to make the business case for software asset management
and how asset management builds on the IT Infrastructure Library
(ITIL) project management methodology.
Sean Robinson, a member of the BCS working party that reviewed
the course, said, “A lot of public and private sector organisations
were pressured to use ITIL, but most people were struggling to take
from the reference material the experience they needed to do
software asset management."
