Google search finds widespread malicious code

Security experts have found thousands of worms, trojans and malicious files all over the internet, by using the Google search engine.

Researchers from security firm Websense carried out a search for malicious executable files indexed by the Google search engine.

A posting on the Websense Security Labs blog reveals that the results included “thousands of pieces of malicious binaries, mostly posted to newsgroups with false names that would normally trick a user”.

It added,” We found many on forum sites, as well as regular personal, educational, compromised, and underground sites.”

The search revealed variants of the Bagel and Mytob worms, Trojan horses and other malware. It also turned up “several pieces of spyware” on internet poker and casino websites.

The researchers said, “While we do not believe that the fact that Google is indexing binary file contents is a large threat this is further evidence of rise in websites being used as an method of storing and distributing malicious code.”
