The Eclipse Foundation open source community has
announced the simultaneous release of 10 open source
projects.
The release – dubbed Callisto – brings together the work of 10
Eclipse community project teams and developers from 15 independent
software suppliers from around the world. It includes seven million
lines of code.
The Eclipse open source initiative to provide a supplier-neutral
software development platform has been described by industry
analyst Gartner as one of the two main integrated development
environments, along with Microsoft’s Visual Studio.
The Callisto release allows users to tap into a variety of
Eclipse projects to build their own applications using Eclipse’s
modular architecture. The synchronised project release is aimed at
providing version compatibility between the different projects. It
includes:
- Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) 2.1
- C/C++ IDE (CDT) 3.1
- Data Tools Platform (DTP) 1.0
- Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) 2.2
- Graphical Editor Framework (GEF) 3.2
- Graphical Modeling Framework (GMF)1.0
- Eclipse Project 3.2
- Test and Performance Tools Platform (TPTP) 4.2,
- Web Tools Platform (WTP) 1.5
- Visual Editor (VE) 1.2.
New technology in the release includes platform support for the
forthcoming Windows Vista operating system and Mac OS X on Intel,
allowing Eclipse developers to build applications for these
operating systems.
The Callisto projects will be available for download on 30
June.
