Microsoft releases fix for Internet
Explorer
Microsoft is issuing five security patches for Windows and the
Office productivity suite today, including a critical fix for the
widely publicised CreateTextRange vulnerability in Internet
Explorer. The Internet Explorer fix comes more than two weeks after
the vulnerability was discovered. Two unofficial patches from
security firms have been available to plug the hole for more than a
week, but Microsoft has warned users not to deploy them.
Iceland Foods upgrades its datawarehouse
Food retailer Iceland Foods has upgraded its datawarehouse to
streamline operations across merchandising, supply chain, finance
and marketing. The retailer is using a 5Tbyte Teradata
datawarehouse in a bid to increase the value of operational,
customer and financial information. The upgrade is expected to
support the business for the next five years and allow Iceland to
roll out new analytical applications.
Salesforce.com service suffers global
downtime
Last Friday Salesforce.com users were left without service as
the company faced problems with its software-as-a-service system.
Worldwide users were affected for at least an hour and North
American users faced a four-hour outage. Salesforce.com blamed the
downtime on a cache server overload and apologised online.
South Wales Police in data management deal
South Wales Police has signed a multimillion-pound contract with
Atos Origin to deliver a new information management system that
promises more efficient processing of crime data. The deal will see
the consolidation of existing policing systems into a single record
management system called Niche RMS.
NCC CIO groups get new managing director
Nick Kirkland has taken over as managing director of National
Computing Centre's senior IT executive groups CIO Connect and the
Impact Programme. Kirkland, who took up the role last week, has
been IT director of Penguin Books and IS general manager for Sony
UK. Most recently he has been working as group vice-president of
Gartner Executive Programme, a group for high-level executives.
