Universities are being encouraged to back-up their data
with a system introduced by the United Kingdom Education and
Research Networking Association (UKERNA).
UKERNA has partnered with outsourced managed data services
provider InTechnology to deliver automated data back-up, data
archiving, hosting and web file services to institutions connected
to the Janet network.
This is UKERNA’s first such agreement with a commercial service
provider, resulting in a 20-40% discount off commercial service
list prices for those that take advantage, said UKERNA.
The Janet network is the third largest network in the UK, and
connects UK universities, further education colleges, research
councils, specialist colleges and adult and community learning
providers.
Over 18 million end-users across 1,000 institutions are
currently served by the Janet network.
Tim Kidd, UKERNA production services director, said,
“Janet users want to do a great deal more across the network than
they did five years ago, and we aim to help them, in particular by
increasingly being an enabler of networked value-added
services.”
Kidd said there was strong demand for off-site back-up services,
as users are passing much more data around the network which needs
to be stored safely and securely.
