In the latest identity theft scare to hit corporate
America, a computer tape containing the personal data of 90,000
banking customers has been lost in transit.
The tape belonged to People’s Bank, headquartered in
Connecticut, which is now writing to all affected customers warning
them of the risks to their financial security as a result of the
loss.
The tape, which was bound for a credit reporting bureau via the
UPS parcel service, contains names, addresses, social security
numbers and current account numbers.
UPS said it and the other parties involved were investigating
the loss.
The bank said it had not received any reports of unauthorised
activity and had no reason to believe the data has been improperly
used.
Among organisations losing consumer data last year were credit
and personal information supplier ChoicePoint and Bank of America,
which lost information on 1.2 million customers.
