Google is distributing a free software startup package
to help promote its web portal and boost online ad
sales.
The new Google Pack includes a selection of Google applications
already available separately, plus a free six-month subscription to
Norton anti-virus software.
In addition, the package includes the open-source Firefox
browser, Adobe Reader for handling PDF files, a RealNetworks media
player, and Cerulean Studios' Trillian instant messaging
program.
A Google screensaver that can automatically display pictures
stored on a user’s PC has also appeared for the first time as part
of the Google Pack.
The package comes with tools to install the applications easily
and to update them once they are on users’ machines.
Google is hoping that by making it easier for users to download
and secure more content on their machines, they will become more
loyal to the Google brand and view more of its ads.
