Opera plugs security holes

Opera Software has issued a security patch to protect its browser users against flaws in Macromedia’s Flash Player, and vulnerabilities when using the open-source browser on Linux and Unix operating systems.
Along with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser, Opera’s browser was affected by previously announced security flaws in Macromedia’s Flash web multimedia software.
Opera has now issued its own protection against this threat, and at the same time addressed vulnerabilities that could allow remote attackers to take over a user’s PC when running on Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris operating systems.
The company’s Opera 8.51 update closes these security holes, which affect versions of the browser going back to version 5.
The last major security update of Opera had addressed security flaws that allowed internet phishers to attack users’ systems.
Opera has an estimated 2% of the browser market according to web analytics firms.
