Bio David Harrison, Chief Executive, Positive
Solutions

Originally from a construction background David
went into financial services in 1983 joining Hambro Life (later to
become Allied Dunbar) as a sales adviser. He worked his way upwards
through sales management, then eventually into a director role. On
leaving Allied Dunbar in 1996 David had become their Area Sales and
Operations director. His style was different to his peers,
believing in strong but small (lean) sales management teams, and
very flat organisational structures. He championed the use of
technology to assist in faster communication and control, and
stripped out many layers of middle management.
He worked with McKinsey and Co. (as part of the AD
team) investigating ways to transform the profitability of the
organisation, and believed that this could only be achieved by
forming a completely new company, rather than attempt to
re-engineer the existing one. Luckily (and predictably) his views
were not agreed with, so he decided to take his own advice and
left, closely followed by one of his senior reporting directors,
Maurice Cotter. They formed Positive Solutions in order to put the
vision into action. David has an MBA through the Open University
business school, which he attained through over 4 years of
personally funded tuition studying in evenings, week ends, and
holidays. The research and lessons learnt from this, together with
the Mckinsey approach has given him a strategic view of how modern
financial services, especially distribution, should be
employed.
