AMD has increased the speed of its dual-core Opteron
server processors in an attempt to stay ahead of Intel in the
market.
Dual-core chip have two processing engines on a single slice of
silicon to boost performance.
AMD has introduced the Opteron 180, 280 and 880 processors,
which operate at 2.4GHz rather than the 2.2GHz of previous
versions.
The new processors are aimed at computers equipped with between
one and eight chips. AMD launched its first dual-core chips this
spring while Intel’s first server dual-core versions will arrive
later this year.
