Nokia has joined the open source Eclipse Foundation and
is kick-starting a project to build a framework for mobile Java
development tools.
Eclipse promotes the open development of software tools to ease
application integration between suppliers.
The Nokia-sponsored mobile Java tools project will include
support for the J2ME mobile specification and will promote the
wider adoption of Java-based mobile applications.
Nokia will donate elements of its existing mobile technology to
Eclipse and work to create mobile Java applications based on the
new mobile information device profile (MIDP) and connected device
configuration (CDC) platforms.
Nokia’s involvement is expected to lead to both open source and
commercial mobile development tools reaching the market.
Nokia made a number of its mobile technology patents open source
earlier this year.
