IT consultancy Atos Origin has mapped the skills needed for
all of the company's job roles to help its 46,000 staff worldwide
plan their careers more effectively.
Employees can use the map of job descriptions to discover what
training they will need to get more highly paid jobs or to plan a
change of career within the firm.
Atos Origin has mapped 6,500 UK employees to the skills matrix and
has assigned their roles to broad job categories that require
similar skills and abilities. They include 31 IT categories and 25
non-IT categories.
"If you are on the intranet, you can click on to the reference job
and it will take you through to a job description," said Clare
Edwards, head of HR for systems integration at Atos Origin.
Atos has given each job a skill rating between zero and 10 so that
employees can find out which roles they could move into by learning
new skills. Unskilled jobs have a rating of zero and senior
management roles have a rating of 10.
Edwards said, "The thing that would differentiate employees [in the
same role] would be their objectives, which would determine their
goals for that year."
Atos Origin's job matrix, which it calls its Global Capability
Model, is also used by managers when promoting, hiring or sacking
staff.
The system was developed after the acquisition of two rival
consultancies. Atos said it needed to impose a common set of skills
across the business. The jobs map was a more methodical approach to
setting skills than other assessment methods, it added.
