Oracle has launched new content management software, offering file management, security and event-driven workflows.

As expected, Oracle unveiled Files 10g at this week's OpenWorld user conference in San Francisco. Part of the Oracle Collaboration Suite, Files 10g is based on the 10g Database and Application Server.

Oracle said the application's support for web services should help developers link it to other applications, and that end-users throughout an enterprise could easily exploit the software through personalised interfaces.

Oracle also announced that the Collaboration Suite would support voice and instant messaging communications, boosting existing web conferencing functions.

Executive vice-president Chuck Rozwat said that integrating instant messaging into the suite - ensuring it had things such as a common installation process with the rest of the platform - had been a big job that took longer than expected to complete.

Some observers have criticised Oracle for allowing its applications business to languish at the expense of the infrastructure products. But Rowzat said that Oracle had actively worked to balance its efforts between improving the 11i E-Business Suite and its technology stack.

According to Rowzat, Oracle has done a "balanced job" in supporting each product line, with both getting a healthy amount of development resources.
