Business software applications developed by SAP benefit
not only enterprises but also an increasing number of armed forces
around the globe.
The supplier has implemented software from the group's Defense
& Security suite of applications for the German Bundeswehr,
which includes the country's armed forces and administration.
SAP technology is at the core of the Bundeswehr's software
application modernisation initiative, which is aimed at a
comprehensive integration of core administrative and logistics
processes, including supply chain management, to support domestic
and deployed operations, the German software company said. The
deployment involves decentralized ERP systems and a new mobile
application.
SAP and the Bundeswehr developed jointly the mobile application,
SAP Mobile Infrastructure, over the past two years, according to
company spokesman Markus Berner.
"This is the first roll-out," Berner said. "The application will
be integrated into our Defense & Security product suite."
The Mobile Infrastructure application enables commanding
officers in the field to initiate and execute combat service
support.
If a military vehicle breaks down, for example, and the
commanding officer calls for service, the responding technician is
equipped with a notebook and can assess the problem, specify the
required repairs, locate the nearest command centre and order the
necessary parts. When the vehicle arrives at the post, it can be
repaired and returned to the field operations as quickly as
possible.
SAP is delivering technology to armed forces in more than a
dozen Nato (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) countries,
including the US.
The company's Defense & Security product family, which is
tailored to meet the specific demands of military and security
organisations, is based on mySAP Business Suite applications.
