UK Online overhaul to improve public access

The move follows an independent review of government communications by Guardian Media Group chairman Bob Phillis, which said that UK Online fell short of its aim of providing a single site for all government services.
Patricia Hewitt, secretary of state for trade and industry, said last week that the UKOnline site would be upgraded to help resolve these problems.
"The first steps will be taken towards the end of February with an enhanced version of UK Online," she said.
The UK Online citizens' portal which is a guide for users for more than 1,000 government websites, went live in December 2000.

However, the government now has a fight on its hands to ensure that the public uses the electronic services being rolled out across the public sector.
