Enterasys has released a wireless access point, the Roamabout R2,
which is compliant with both 802.11b and the forthcoming 802.11a
standards, allowing users to upgrade to the latter when 802.11a
network interface cards are available, writes Antony Adshead
The 802.11b standard is the current favourite for wireless Lans,
offering 11 megabits per second (mbps), but 802.11a will offer
54mbps.
The R2 will offer routing, management and policy based networking
and point-to-multipoint wireless networking, creating a 1-100
meshed configuration for high availability and 10/100 Fast Ethernet
uplink to wired networks.
The R2's switching functions offer layer 3 and 4 inspection of
packets for quality of service capabilities across hybrid
wired/wireless networks, and a remote power feature which
eliminates the need to wire electricity to each access point.
