Major computer companies have agreed to develop new technologies
for connecting data storage systems in future high-performance
computers, writes Matthew Thomas. This could potentially eliminate
a major bottleneck on performance as microprocessor speeds continue
to increase.
APT Technologies, Dell Computer, IBM, Intel, Maxtor, Quantum and
Seagate Technology are working to develop a storage interface
specification for the next-generation computing platform, called
Serial ATA, to replace Parallel ATA. The first specs are expected
later this year.
The technology will also allow the use of lower voltages
compared with Parallel AT technology, important in mobile
applications.
