Adobe has updated Flash Builder and Flex to enable developers to build applications for iPhones, iPads and BlackBerry PlayBooks.

Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5 support mobile apps for the Android Market, Apple App Store and BlackBerry App World. The tools are available standalone or as part of Creative Suite 5.5 Web Premium and Master Collection.

The tools are designed to help organisations create new applications for the growing number of consumers who own smartphones and tablet devices. They can also help internal IT build connectivity between enterprise systems and handheld devices that staff own.

"The reaction from developers to the new mobile capabilities in Flash Builder 4.5 and the Flex 4.5 framework has been absolutely fantastic," said Ed Rowe, vice-president of developer tooling at Adobe.

Adobe says that with Flash Builder and Flex, enterprises can now use one tool, one framework and one codebase to create applications that run on desktops as well as on smartphones and tablets.

Flash Builder 4.5 includes code templates, code completion and code generation features to help developers create Flex and ActionScript applications and deploy them using Adobe AIR software, Adobe's runtime for standalone applications.

A trial version of Flash Builder 4.5 is available on Adobe's website. The street price of Flash Builder 4.5 Standard is £181.20 plus VAT. Flash Builder 4.5 Premium costs £413.00 plus VAT. Upgrade pricing for Flash Builder 4.5 is £37.16 (plus VAT), and volume licensing is available. Flex 4.5 is available as a free open source framework.
