Organisations that want to try out virtualisation, particularly the ability to run multiple operating systems on the same computer, are being offered VMware Server software free of charge.
With the move, VMware aims to attract users to its software, rather than the open source Xen or Microsoft Virtual Server.
VMware Server lets users partition a physical server into multiple virtual servers, which can reduce hardware costs and enable applications to be run more efficiently. The software runs on a Windows or Linux host operating system, allowing guest operating systems to run on top of it in compartments known as virtual machines.
The software includes wizards to help users set up virtual servers, said the firm.
