RAC Software Solutions has gone live with a new software infrastructure underpinning the mobile services it provides to police forces, emergency services and utilities. The result will be a cheaper and more flexible service, it said.
RAC Software provides a range of asset, fleet and field service management services to 550 organisations, with 10,000 users. Its customers include most UK police forces, the MoD, local authorities, housing groups, facilities management firms and the service sector.
Last year it spent 12 months evaluating mobile products from a range of suppliers, and decided to choose a suite from iAnywhere, a subsidiary of Sybase.
The suite included M-Business Anywhere Application Edition and the SQL Anywhere database. RAC has an IT team of 90 staff, and iAnywhere provided software development training for many of the developers.
RAC Software needed to replace ageing software written in Microsoft C Sharp by a third-party developer. By migrating to the iAnywhere system, RAC Software's customers will benefit from a better service, said Kevin Stenner, business development manager at RAC Software.
RAC customers who require the software to integrate with their own systems will find it easier because the new mobile platform is based on open standards, and is therefore easier to extend.
It will also be used within the RAC, to help it manage its distributed workforce of engineers through a command and control system. "Rather than having to travel back to base, engineers can process more jobs on the road." said Stenner.
