Swindon Borough Council has created a web infrastructure using software from Microsoft and Obtree in a bid to reduce management costs and link to other local authorities.

Ross Kitchener, web editor and project manager at the council, said Swindon was previously spending a lot of money with suppliers to support 10 council websites. "We wanted to bring the sites together without losing their independence," he said.

Another part of the project was a Pathfinder programme to create a common platform to exchange information between Swindon and adjacent local authorities. "The project is looking to transfer information such as data on local schools using XML," said Kitchener.

Obtree C3 software is the content engine for the website. "Obtree deskills the job of web publishing," Kitchener said.
