Supermarket chain Somerfield has reduced its telecoms costs by 15% since outsourcing its communications infrastructure in a £50m five-year deal to BT one year ago.

The company, which has 1,330 Somerfield and Kwik Save stores across the UK, said the major cost savings have come from BT's managed billing service. The service provides a single bill report covering all of its networks and 15 different service and equipment suppliers, reducing administration and management time.

Gordon Scholes, IT director at Somerfield, said, "Outsourcing our communications enables us to focus on our core business - the products, services and value that we offer our customers. The simplification and rationalisation of our communications infrastructure is playing a crucial role in our five-year strategic plan."
