Further delays to the implementation of ADSL mean the introduction of the 8Mbps technology will now begin at the end of June.

"It is absolutely outrageous that delay after delay is affecting the roll-out of technology that is widely used in the US," one IT manager said.

"ISDN is just too slow and too expensive to see widespread uptake of serious e-commerce facilities. I want to use ADSL now."

Another IT manager said, "The UK must get the last mile sorted out so that people can be always online at a reasonable cost. BT's intransigence is reflected in its share price."

Twenty-three per cent of those questioned in the survey believed the delay of ADSL would not hinder e-commerce and 8% were unsure.
