Smoothwall improves school web filtering platform

Antony Savvas

Smoothwall has improved its schools web filtering platform with new management features to make sure web policies are adhered to.

School Guardian 2008 will be available from January, and school administrators will have more visibility and control over network and internet use, with new support for instant messaging applications and real-time traffic logs and graphs.

Automatic updates from the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) also ensure that block lists are kept current and legally compliant.

Other enhancements include improved reporting, logging and configuration capabilities, and a new easy-to-understand dashboard for "at-a-glance" surfing surveillance, said Smoothwall.

Smoothwall said more flexible controls also mean that filtering restrictions can now be "fine-tuned" based on time of day, user privileges or policy.

School Guardian provides Dynamic Content Analysis, which is a technology that can screen the actual content and construction of web pages in detail, detecting and blocking objectionable material as well as dangerous hidden content.
