Zone Labs crashes its users' firewalls

Antony Savvas

A bug in the daily update of the Zone Labs firewall solution crashed the security of around 50,000 users at the end of last week.

Users of Zone Alarm Pro and Zone Alarm Security Suite saw their firewalls crash after downloading Zone Labs’ daily program advisor update. The company said misconfigured code caused the problem.

The program advisor update contains a list of trusted programs that inform the firewall as to which applications can be allowed to connect to the internet without any user interaction.

The Zone Alarm products check for a new version of the advisor on start-up and load it automatically.

Zone Labs, which is part of Check Point, said it corrected the problem within hours of discovery.
