Auto e-marketplace Covisint has launched the second version of its Covisint Supplier Connection, a Web-based electronic data interchange (EDI) tool that will enable small automotive suppliers to communicate electronically with vehicle manufacturers.

Covisint spokesman Dan Jankowski said that although many companies in the automotive industry use EDI, smaller companies have not been able to communicate electronically because the cost to implement an EDI infrastructure is prohibitive.

Now, however, Covisint customers, large or small, will be able to send and receive supply chain documents electronically whether or not they have an EDI system, he said.

"The smaller companies have had to communicate manually via fax or telephone," Jankowski said. "Now they can do it without having to implement EDI at a significantly lower cost. And that's what we're after."
