Education inspectorate OFSTED has awarded a seven-year, public-private partnership contract worth £28m to systems integrator Logica.

Stuart Finlayson

The contract is for the development and management of an IT and communications service for the Government's Early Years education initiative.

From September this year, OFSTED will be responsible for the registration of all childcare providers, a task that is currently carried out by the various local authorities.

Logica will provide desktop hardware and software for staff based in eight regional centres, where information will be pooled from 150 local authorities.

The company will also specify, design and construct a database containing the first nationwide register of childcare providers. Logica will undertake the initial data inputting and manage the ongoing support.
